Functional traits contribute in opposite directions to taxonomic turnover in northeastern US forests over time

چکیده
Aims Understanding the processes driving forest dynamics requires considering that species within communities do not respond in a coordinated manner to external factors. We argue temporal turnover composition results from contrasting differences life-history and functional strategies (demography seed wood traits) might simultaneously promote stability dynamism by operating on distinct subsets of species. Specifically, fast taxonomic should be promoted take advantage sporadically available resources, while with conservative stress-tolerant life-histories. Location Northeastern USA. Methods combine demographic information (survival, recruitment) over 14-yr period temperate tree northeastern USA trait mass density as proxy for their reproductive resource acquisition strategies, evaluate differential contribution ecological (low vs. high mass/wood density) rates compositional forests. Results The apparent forests is mostly driven mortality low recruitment small-seeded Simultaneously, opposite traits, i.e., density, contribute more stability. Our findings suggest are outcome opposing contributions life history plant traits rapid differentially across Conclusions Small-seeded faster than traits. Not accounting these community-level analyses likely mask complex This study demonstrates importance studying structure under dynamic scope accounts

Increasing turnover through time in tropical forests.
Tree turnover rates were assessed at 40 tropical forest sites. Averaged across inventoried forests, turnover, as measured by tree mortality and recruitment, has increased since the 1950s, with an apparent pantropical acceleration since 1980. Among 22 mature forest sites with two or more inventory periods, forest turnover also increased. The trend in forest dynamics may have profound effects on ...
متن کاملOpposite momenta lead to opposite directions
When a particle decays into two fragments, the wavefunctions of the latter are spherical shells with expanding radii. In spite of this spherical symmetry, the two particles can be detected only in opposite directions. When particles at rest decay into two fragments, the latter have opposite momenta, p1 + p2 = 0. (1) Yet, the statistical distribution of each fragment is isotropic. The same holds...
متن کاملHistorical changes in northeastern US bee pollinators related to shared ecological traits.
Pollinators such as bees are essential to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. However, despite concerns about a global pollinator crisis, long-term data on the status of bee species are limited. We present a long-term study of relative rates of change for an entire regional bee fauna in the northeastern United States, based on >30,000 museum records representing 438 species. Over a 140-y...
متن کاملUrbanization Drives SOC Accumulation, Its Temperature Stability and Turnover in Forests, Northeastern China
Global urbanization is a vital process shaping terrestrial ecosystems but its effects on forest soil carbon (C) dynamics are still not well defined. To clarify the effects of urbanization on soil organic carbon (SOC) variation, 306 soil samples were collected and analyzed under two urban–rural gradients, defined according to human disturbance time and ring road development in Changchun, northea...
